Sirach 3:17-18, 20, 28-29. Hebrews 12:18-19, 22-24a; Luke 14:1, 7-14. Sirach describes humility as the hallmark of those who find favor with God. The Letter to the Hebrews reminds the community that Jesus is the mediator of a new covenant. In the Gospel, Jesus uses a parable to convey the importance of humility for his disciples.

Domenica 22A Del Tempo Ordinario

When people go to any event with assigned seating at tables, they are eager to see at which table they are sitting. Obviously, the hope is to be seated in the center and in front as close to the main table as possible. Where one is assigned to sit indicates something about the social pecking order. Jesus commented on just this in today’s reading and proposes a strategy based on humility rather than on one’s own concept of self-importance. Go lower so that you’ll be asked to go higher. Look at that! Let your status be affirmed by others rather than overstated by yourself. That’s a unique strategy. And to think that Jesus is the one who proposes it. However, to his credit it is based on humility. It would be nice to try it!                                                 –Fr. Gael Sulliavn, SDB
