Isaiah 55:1-3; Romans 8:35, 37-39; Matthew 14:13-21. The Lord speaks through Isaiah, exhorting his people to come to the water and be renewed by the everlasting covenant. Paul  tells the Romans that nothing can separate them from the love of Christ. In the Gospel, after hearing of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus heals the sick and feeds the 5,000 abundantly.

Domenico 18A Del tempo Ordinario

From Fr. Gael: The multiplication of the loaves and the fishes is a miracle which answers the immediate needs of the crowd which has followed him to listen to him preach. He satisfies their physical hunger. When they see and experience this, they then look upon Jesus as an apt candidate to be their king. He is tagged with Messianic expectations. Jesus flees from this kind of adulation which is self-serving on the part of the crowd. It is not the basis for a true relationship. Isaiah in the first reading tries to clarify that kind of thinking. He explains to the people of Israel in exile that the basis of the relationship with God is the covenant in which God says: “I will be your God and you will be my people.” The basis is not personal gain but rather committed relationship between God and his people. And so it is only natural that Jesus, Son of God, would run away from anything less. The reflection that is incumbent upon us, then, is what is the basis of my personal relationship with God?  –Fr. Gael Sullivan, SDB

Speaking of Vocations: Could God be Calling Me? YES! God calls each of us to life, to wholeness, and to service. The task of the young adult is to discern what path God wants him or her to follow. The Lord calls most people to marriage and family. For the Christian young adult this is a very important decision. Choosing to marry is not just a romantic response, but also a very specific process that includes prayer, investigation, involvement, and experience.

God calls some people to religious life as a Sister, Brother, or Priest. A religious vocation follows the same process. We call this the discernment process. Want to learn more about the Salesian Vocation? Email Fr. John Roche, SDB at jrochesdb@gmail.com
