Domenica 21A Del Tempo Ordinario
From Fr. Gael: This Gospel is from the chapter following last week’s reading. Again, it is about making a choice about which way we want to go. It is about much more than cozy fellowship. It is about making a choice for the Kingdom of God and all that implies, about the standard of a Christlike life for which the Kingdom stands. It is about more than going to Church each Sunday. It is about living Christ every day of our lives. It is about more than external compliance. It is about internal conviction. Following Christ comes at a cost and we choose to pay the price. It is then that Christ knows who we are. It is not that we are perfectly perfect, but that we are thoroughly committed to live up to the struggle each day of our lives. That is success in the following of Christ. That earns us our internal identity card of being a Christian, that is, of being a true follower of Christ. –Fr. Gael Sullivan, SDB

Second Collection: Today we have a second collection for our parish school. Please be generous!
Madonna della Guardia: Today, at the 11:45 AM Italian Mass, we will honor Madonna della Guardia. She appeared to a shepherd on Mt. Figogna, by Genoa, on August 29, 1490, and is honored and revered by the Genovese the world over. “Help me to build ‘holy places’ in the hearts, families, and lives of people.” Visit the image of Madonna at the side altar!
Speaking of our Madonnas: On September 29, we celebrate Madonna dei Miracoli, and on October 4-5 we celebrate Madonna del Lume! Mark your calendars!
Prayer Service for the People of Hong Kong: All are invited to Pray for Hong Kong on Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. at St. Anne of the Sunset Church, 850 Judah in San Francisco. Sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco Chinese Ministry and the Office of Human Life & Dignity, the vigil will include Eucharistic adoration and Benediction. Hong Kong Cardinal John Tong is asking for prayer and sacrifice and will hold a service Aug. 23 in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is experiencing demonstrations in reaction to mainland China’s proposed extradition legislation, officially called the Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019, that would see mainland China have extradition rights for the first time over any city resident, including foreign nationals as well as tourists. National Public Radio published a background piece explaining the history. CNN has video of Sunday’s demonstration that drew hundreds of thousands of protesters to the streets while Mainland China massed troops on the border.
Eucharistic Adoration/Scripture Study: Every Wednesday, we have Eucharistic Adoration from 7:00-8:00 PM in the Church. Our Scripture Study will begin again in September. The parking lot will be open.
Alcoholics Anonymous: The AA Meets every Thursday at 6:00 PM, in the parish center. “The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking.”-Third Tradition.
School has Started: Our Saints Peter and Paul K-8 school began last Wednesday. SS. Peter and Paul’s Racial Non-Discrimination Policy: “SS Peter & Paul School, mindful of its mission to be witness to the love of Christ for all, admits students of any race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded to or made available to students at this school. SS Peter & Paul School does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin, age sex, or disability in administration of educational policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs. Likewise, SS. Peter and Paul School does not unlawfully discriminate against any applicant for employment on the basis of age, sex, disability, race, color, and national and/or ethnic origin.”

Domenica 20A Del Tempo Ordinario
From Fr. Gael: In the second chapter of Luke we find these words: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed.” Today in the 12th Chapter Luke writes: “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already blazing! There is a baptism with which I must be baptized, and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished! Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” Jesus represents one set of values and the world represents another. The two are incompatible. We have to choose. Fyodor Dostoyevsky once wrote, “If I were to find that the truth and Christ were incompatible, I would choose Christ over the truth.” What a powerful statement. That great Russian writer chose Christ. Who do we choose?

Choose Life! “In Europe, America, Latin America, Africa, and in some countries of Asia, there are genuine forms of ideological colonization taking place. And one of these – I will call it clearly by its name – is [the ideology of] ‘gender’. Today children – children! – are taught in school that everyone can choose his or her sex. Why are they teaching this? Because the books are provided by the persons and institutions that give you money. These forms of ideological colonization are also supported by influential countries. And this terrible!
In a conversation with Pope Benedict, who is in good health and very perceptive, he said to me: ‘Holiness, this is the age of sin against God the Creator’. He is very perceptive. God created man and woman; God created the world in a certain way… and we are doing the exact opposite.’”–Pope Francis, address to the Bishops of Poland, World Youth Day, 2016.
