Revelation 11:19a, 12:1-6a, 10ab; 1 Corinthians 15: 20-27; Luke 1: 39-56. Today’s first reading describes the struggle between good and evil, using the image of a woman giving birth to the Anointed One. The second reading speaks of Christ raising up his own at the end of time. The Gospel tells of the visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary to Elizabeth, recalling Mary’s openness and courage in doing God’s will.
Assunzione B. V. Maria
From the Pastor’s Desk (Guest Column):
Friends, ready for a bit of local history?
Immediately following the devastating fire of September 7, 1962, which destroyed St. Mary’s Cathedral, Archbishop Joseph McGucken began the process of constructing a new Cathedral.
Preliminary sketches for the new cathedral were been submitted, sketches that ranged from traditional to California mission-style.
The heated controversies that resulted from these traditional preliminary sketches, convinced the Archbishop to scrap the proposed plans and hire the innovative architect Pietro Belluschi of MIT and Pier Luigi Nervi, specialist on large scale structures.
Ground was broken in August, 1965; the cornerstone was blessed on December 13, 1967, and the building completed by 1970. The new cathedral, dedicated to our Blessed Lady of the Assumption was formally blessed on May 5, 1971.
In his powerful dedicatory sermon, Archbishop John Quinn captured the magnificence and importance of St. Mary’s:
“Like sunshine in a summer shower, the cathedral reveals the impalpable rainbow of the immaterial world’. It is vision and hope… The sheer, fresh beauty, ever ancient, ever new, is too great for mortal vision. The immense splendor of this symphony of stone and glory cry out in praise of Him who was, who is, and who is to come.”
Thank you, loyal and generous San Francisco Catholics for not following the anti-cathedral protesters of the day and joining instead your archbishop in erecting such a magnificent house of worship in honor of our Blessed Lady of the Assumption.
Happy 50th Anniversary to the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption (1971-2021)!
–Fr. Al Mengon, SDB

Salesian Professions: Today at the 5:00pm Mass, two Salesian Brothers will make their religious vows. They are Novice: Reegan Ledet (First Profession) and Brother: Khoa Pham (Perpetual Profession). Please pray for them as they take this important step!
Jim Staley: We lost a treasured member of the Saints Peter and Paul Family last Sunday, James (Jim) Staley. As Sensei at the Salesian Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Jim taught generations of boys & girls and young men & women the martial arts, and the self-control, maturity, and self-awareness it inspires. In addition to that, Jim was a big part of practically every Club event for decades. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Joselyn, and his daughters Jasmine and Jade, and to all whom Jim touched so much. Jim’s Memorial Mass HAD been scheduled for Tuesday, August 17, but has been postponed. We will share the new date when we have it.
In lieu of flowers, the family is seeking donations to pool together for a couple of nonprofits that Jim Staley held close to his heart; Salesian Martial Arts Program and Saints Peter and Paul School.
If you are able to contribute to Jim’s remembrance gift, you can send money via Venmo to Jade Staley (Venmo ID – @jadems). Or if you prefer to donate by check, please send checks to Joselyn Staley at 3212 Shelter Creek LN, San Bruno, CA 94066. Jade will be using her employer matching program to donate this money to both nonprofits, which is a 3:1 matching program.
Mark your Calendars! We will have a combined Thank you! and Welcome! reception for both Fr. Gael Sullivan and Fr. Tho Bui on Sunday, August 22, following the 12 noon Mass. PLEASE RSVP so we have an idea as to how many to prepare for. Please call 415-421-0809 or email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Archdiocesan Annual Appeal: The 2021 AAA has begun. This year our assessment is $57,954. So far, 59 parishioners have pledged/paid $27,070, leaving us with a balance of $30,884. Please join your fellow parishioners in meeting our shared obligation! Please help us meet this obligation.
Together in Holiness Marriage Conference: On Saturday, September 18, 2021, at the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Belmont, the St. John Paul II Foundation and the Archdiocese of San Francisco Office of Marriage and Family will present this year’s Together in Holiness Conference. Together in Holiness is unique in that it offers a place of encounter, where God’s plan for marriage and family is proclaimed and a desire for holiness is enkindled in the hearts of married couples. This is complemented by ongoing formation for spouses within a natural community of friends who accompany each other on the path to holiness by providing formation that will help learning take root in daily living. For more information, please visit togetherinholiness.org or email email@example.com.
