Deuteronomy 4:1-2, 6-8; James 1:17-18, 21b-22, 27; Mark 7:1-8. 14-15, 21-23. In the first reading, Moses proclaims the statutes of the Lord to the people, that they may have both life and land. In the second reading, James instructs believers to be doers of the word, caring for orphans and widows, and keeping oneself unstained by the world. In the Gospel, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and scribes with their hypocrisy, noting that what makes a person unclean comes from within, not without.

Domenico 22A Del Tempo Ordinario

The Day God Changed His Mind

August is the month that reminds us that Saint Rocco and his dog, Roquet, were heaven’s first animal rights activists.

St. Rocco, with his faithful canine companion Roquet by his side is beloved in many European places, especially in Calabria and Sicily.

St. Rocco began to wander from village to village accompanied by his little Roquet. Together they served the plague stricken Italy while on a pilgrimage to Rome.

This was the time of the Black Death, the bubonic plague, when Rocco discovered that he could heal the stricken by means of his touch. It was about the year 1327 when the life of the saintly man came to its completion.

Saint Rocco ascended to Heaven, where he was welcomed by St. Peter, the Celestial Gatekeeper. When St. Peter refused to admit Roquet, due to a no pet policy, St. Rocco insisted that the dog  had saved his life. St. Peter replied that a rooster had saved his soul, but that he had never even imagined taking him along in Heaven. Refusing to abandon his faithful companion, St. Rocco sent news of this conflict and reached the ears of God the Father, who commanded that St. Rocco and Roquet be admitted to heaven together.

When St. Peter complained about the neglect of his rooster and threatened to resign his post, the heavenly Father agreed that the famous rooster should also enter.

Then the other saints all made a claim for the animals that served them loyally.

St. Jerome for his lion, St. Calm for his cat, St. Agnes for her lamb, St. Francis for all the other birds and beasts, St. John Bosco for his gray dog.

The Heavenly Father saw that he had no choice. He ordered St. Peter to throw open the Gates of Heaven to every creature who had served his will.

And it was the doing of St. Rocco and his little Roquet.
